INVOLVE is a national advisory group funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to support public and patient involvement (PPI) in NHS, public health and social care research. PPI involvement helps ensure that research projects take into account the needs and perspectives of those affected by the research being conducted. PPI involvement in research design, delivery and dissemination makes it more effective, more credible, more relevant, and helps ensure findings are applied. For projects to win funding from funders such as the NIHR they need to describe how they will implement PPI.

During this presentation Dr Christopher Griffiths, Research Manager, St Andrews Healthcare will present how people with experience of mental illness were involved in two research projects. One will be the Astra Zeneca funded ‘Ups and Downs’ project, which investigated the support people require during different phases of bipolar disorder. The other is the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Community Health Networks’ project which sought to understand how connections to people, places and activities were utilised by people with severe mental illness to benefit their health and wellbeing.
